Rauno Neito, University of Tartu
The presentation reflects on two studies, carried out as parts of the overall doctoral research, which is to identify students’ situational interest and the influence of the classroom activities on promoting students’ situational interest. The aim of this research is to ultimately identify an idealistic approach to teach physics in a manner that enables students to make sense of the phenomena connected to the concepts. The results of the first study indicats that the data collection instrument needs a methodological revision, considering the students’ response rate to the instrument is less than expected. In addressing such limitation, the second study focuses on undertaking a different approach both to measure student interest, and also to identify the ways to improve physics teaching. In so doing, the second study aims to a develop a valid and reliable instrument, and enhance the theoretical background by incorporating the concept of relevance.
